McKayla Rose Maroney retired from the sport of artistic gymnastics to become a singer. She was a member of the American women's gymnastics squad known as known as the Fierce Five. In the Summer Olympics in 2012 she took home a gold in the team event and a silver for individual vault. Early life. McKayla Rose Maroney is the daughter of Erin Maroney and Mike Maroney. (died 2019.) McKayla is a native of Irish Catholic ancestry. McKayla had two brothers: Tarynn and Kav. The homeschooling she did was in order to help her prepare for elite gymnastics. Maroney said that "when I was a kid, I used to watch Tarzan, and run around on my all-fours. My mother said, "I should put this kid into gymnastics."
